multiple reflections and light sources illuminate stuffed foxes and skeletons in a darkened room

"Foxlight" is one of a series of paintings I made of the exhibition halls in the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.

A glass case full of different types of foxes faces a brightly-lit case of mounted pigeon specimens. Beyond them are more glass cases of mounted skeletons. The pigeons are reflected twice, once in the panel of glass in front of the foxes and once behind.

The room was quiet and dark and dramatically lit and the green lights and violet shadows and reflections in the many layers of glass added surreality to the scene.
