Selkie Wife

© Copyright Alessandra Kelley

A pencil drawing framed with tiny seals, fish, and sea life, of the sleeping faces of a bearded man and a baby in front of a leaded-pane window's view of the ocean. A woman, sad-faced, holding a sealskin, caresses the man's forehead.

Selkies were seal-women in Icelandic, Irish and Scottish folklore. They took the form of women, but could return to the sea in their sealskins.

I imagined the sorrow of one of these creatures as she leaves her sleeping husband and child for the ocean.
