Spring (Hades and Persephone) by Alessandra Kelley

Spring (Hades and Persephone)

The story of Hades and Persephone is a complicated mystery. He is the god of the underworld, of death, of hidden wealth. She is the goddess of spring and rebirth. Although Persephone is a sympathetic character in her stories, she is also mentioned by Homer and others as the more terrifying of the two.

This is meant to illuminate something of the relationship between them.

The Imminence of Love by Alessandra Kelley

This is one of a suite of paintings I created for "Second Sights: The Art of Presence", a project which combines painting, textiles, clothing design, and photography to examine the art of presence and the ranges of possibility. This is a painting of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. The trees on each side of the bridge are on fire, and there is a tiny pile of burning masks at the lower left.

The garments which correspond to "The Imminence of Love" are called "Air, Fire, Water" and can be seen on the Clothing and Textiles gallery page.

Another of the "Second Sights" paintings, this depicts the three Graces, Greek goddesses of charm, beauty, dance, and the graces of life.

As part of the project, I also designed and crafted the garments depicted in this painting and the one above.

Light Become Silence, an egg tempera of archangels by Alessandra Kelley

Light Become Silence

This is a meditation on the fall of the angel Lucifer, who in some stories was originally one of the Archangels. "Lucifer" comes from the Latin for "light", and surely his defiance of God was the ultimate silence. It was sparked when I learned that in Christian mythology there are four archangels, in Islamic seven.
