Coming Home

A narrow alley, dark but deeply colored, seen from the rear three people, a man in a long cloak and bicorne hat, a woman in a high-waisted long red coat, and a child in a long white dress, venture towards a modern night-lit city landscape.

This painting came about when I was playing with textural and night coloration possibilities with egg tempera.

I had also been binge-looking at the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, and liked the idea of some of his odd, just-post-Napoleonic everypeople venturing down a narrow alley, with all the colors and textures I could put into a night scene.

I think somewhere in my thoughts Caspar David Friedrich must have collided with Edward Hopper.
